North Coast Music Festival 2016
A subtle breeze swept over our necks and rinsed off the suns heat whilst we entered Union Park to claim our tickets at the press lines. It was a sheer blessing to be able to enjoy the festival without the suns unforgiving discomfort. The weather this weekend seemed to be in the most perfect cohesion with our skin. We made our way towards the front of the lines where we were patted down with approval and cuffed tight within that day’s festival wrist band. I admired the color choice as I began walking into the park drawing my eyes forward and gazed from side to side recalling where and who I was as a person just one year ago. We scanned through our pamphlets planning how the night should go but of course it was more so of a loose outline since planning to not plan seemed a bit better use of our time.
The acts this year were diverse with live rappers to top dj acts band even some beloved jam bands. Acts included Bassnectar, Odesza, The Floozies, Umphrey’s Mcgee, Juicy J, Action Bronson, Brillz, Vulfpeck and many, many more. The festival seemed to cater to everyone interest and I had even got plenty of comments from attendees who came solely for their favorite act whom have traveled hours in order to vibe out amongst the fellow fans.
The lay out was conveniently sectioned into stages, food vendors and a pathway of apparel and jewelry shops. There are definite shops that make it out to each festival including Grass Roots Hats who had recently opened their Chicago location just months prior.
A brilliant vibration rang through the park as Odesza took the main stage. They purified air and publicized over the crowds with electronic melodies. Strings harmonized between rhythms in the memories of when guitar chords ruled the radio. A reminiscence of family encapsulated us within a circle of once strangers which had been transformed into my brothers and sisters. As we fell under the witness of the moon; its magic swayed within us and swept us up into the imagination of the music. I watched as the crowd danced within a deep meditation as intertwining ribbons of energy released out from their chest into the skies and melted us together into the atmosphere. The crowds tilted heads upwards into the stars with arms wide as we journeyed an unspoken feeling. Our hands painted in dance while caressed in whirl winds of emotion.
As Bassnectar took the stage it was stylized in the creep whilst Bassnectar junkies came out dressed with a seventies stank with a new innovation of inter-dimensional twists. Ladies heads bang and hips shakes in tangles with a complete loss of body. Their heavy Hip- Hop influence infused through a movement of pasties and cannabis within a laser tag of Lasse fare culture. Crypt walked and shouting while hyped amplified along the sides with soda cans. Blank eyes hazed out in the gaze of the youth whom had euthanized the beat in a breed of species of womping frenzy freaks. They dressed in yesterday’s throwback and tomorrow’s new unexplored territories. Lines erased and meshed into the sinking of their continuity and acceptance of dance. Foxes with fox tails and bandanas showcasing piercing eyes from the underground scene which had come alive right before my eyes.
Scratching on the bottom of the bowl for the tar of resin of the most dankest, sits a wiry beard with in what he describes an “alligator” frame. He grabs the mic with such power screamed into it a passion with incomparable at this festival utterly captivating in his lyrical rhythms. Chill beats lay underneath while he spit the stories of his own. A Complete thought of precision and the exact the detail of how. Unparalleled to this day of what type of rap he laid down. I was amazed how he had memorized the ins and outs of the complexes of his poetry. Without a fuck to give what you thought about his physical appearance he left you stunned at his sheer abilities while rooted by low subs bass and high cries of violin.
The festival ended with Zedd whose high dimensional sound touched each aspect of
new age dance music. Zedd combined touches of vocals intermixed with heavy dance beats dub influences. His visual display mesmerized and entranced the crowd to follow through the tunnels of fluorescents. The globos lights cut through the open air over our heads while a smoke fog created swirls of blue and green clouds. An illusion teased us while fingertips brushed the clouds just mere inches above our heads. His generational sound swept through us putting in perspective who we are as a new generation.
We left Northcoast with a deeper appreciation for the music that each artist had given us. The festival ended at 10 each night and allowed the thousands of attendees enough time to set out into the city night. The three days came and went faster than I can remember. I’m excited to see how much more the stages will evolve next year. I thoroughly enjoyed to diversity of live acts and DJs. Not only did this draw a diverse group of attendees but in effect, it allows many to discover new music and artists which they wouldn’t have primarily listened to before. As Music, visual Art, and computers become more infused; the possibilities of what this generation of artists will create and reinvent are endless.
Summer Set Music & Camping Festivals 2016 line up was screaming with the most well known electronic and musical acts to date. The festival was held at Somerset, Wisconsin and celebrated its fifth year anniversary with acts which included; Steve Aoki, Skrillex, Bassnectar, Gramatik, Flux Pavillion, Marshmello, Nghtmre, Infected Mushrooms, STS9, Chance the Rapper and a slew of others including an EPIC filthy Jauz after party!

This year we had the privilege of staying in the RV camping site which was a whole new perspective for attending a festival. I personally had yet to experience this side of festival life but If you have ever been camping; then you too share my deep appreciation for air-conditioning. There are several obvious perks when staying in the RV camping site if your budget permits. Perks like, how much I didn’t miss waking up under the blaze of an afternoon sun dripping in a mixture of my own sweat and the toxins melting through my pores from the night before. Secondly, the public showers were spacious and warm without a line hurrying you. Close by were a more hygienic choice of public restrooms equipped with toilet paper! And of course last but not least, electricity was a definite plus. It is definitely nice to have a constant line of communication with your fellow festie goers. This made it easier to explore the festival without any worry because everyone knows how easy it is to loose friends in the crowds at some of the most dire times.
Although, there are those small luxuries of life to be grateful for within the RV camping; I have to be honest when stating there were just some aspects of the RV site that didn’t compare to roughing it. Within tent camping there was somewhat more of an adventurous aspect; something undeniably went void along with the interesting characters and stories which resided within the fabric of those polyester walls. More that half the times these neighbors which were once strangers end up being your new best friends! In all honesty that didn’t happen to us this year; mainly because we were more secluded. This is neither good nor bad. I guess a plus was we got to spend more time with the friends we came there with. In contrast the home status of your tent created an undying bond within the proximity of close neighbors. The raw in the moment incidents in which strangers find conversation were harder to come by because it was easier to hide away behind closed doors. The excitement of the night or the intimacy of the morning with your eyes half open were more exclusive within the RV side. This could be good or could take out that element of surprise to others.
There were four stages this year including; The Grove, The Saloon, The Big Top, and of course the Main Stage. The park was laid out with the Main Stage held on concrete surrounded by multiple food vendors and classic carnival attractions. When making your way to The Big Top you don’t have to feel bad about missing leg day at the gym because believe me; they got you covered!
Around each corner there was some new twist of an artistic touch that stuck out. An artist’s take on a seductive Cherokee woman with hair dancing in the wind laid her eyes on you as you passed into the trails of the park. Amazingly, the artists stood outside painting murals allowing an audience to continue checking in on their progress throughout the weekend. There were also romantic garden scapes with benches along the side that really brought in a feminine aura. The Main Stage had these cartoon-esque metal trees which held Chinese nylon lanterns that really brought up the mood of the park creating a bubbly virtual reality feel.

One very memorable piece of art was found at the grove. While we sat waiting for Grimes to make the stage; we listened to opera play in the background as we observed a particularly interesting piece of art. Standing at least 20 feet tall; devilish tree branches snarled fire into the skies. This was an interactive piece in which several participants could choose to pull cords in order to spark a fire; only to realize that if they all pulled at the exact same time the fires would combine into an overwhelming magnitude out of its mechanical branches.

Music was well noted and not only were there electronic acts but some live acts made their way in as well. DJ headliners were all about the filth this year with dirty bass lines. While the tents seem to have laid down more deep house acts. There were notable vocalists and rappers including Eryn Allen Kane.
I was really excited to see Skrillex make it out. He left out his lighter mixes and instead had dirty hip-hop matched with progressive dance beats and filthy bass lines. He was colored in red with an eerily creepy skeleton graphic dancing around in a contorted torso and was amputated from before the pelvis bone down. It was obvious that many people came solely to see Skrillex and the crowd went hard to show their undying support.

Marshmello played a day set which was evenly set up for a very diverse crowd. I found he chose to mix softer songs in the beginning of his set and got progressively harder and filthier at the end.
Infected Mushrooms had an underground feel mixed with heavy metal guitarist who’s crunch was amplified throughout The Big Top tent. Their stage design was accompanied by an otherworldly mushroom with octopus legs outstretching from each side. It was quite the image to have in mind whilst listening to this unique mesh of hard rock solos meets dance beats.
It was great seeing Alison Wonderland come out as well this year. I was also really interested in hearing her get the crowd hyped and exclaiming before dropping her infamous dub hit that it was written about anxiety. It was so nice to hear her reach out to her fans and show how we all can relate to the obstacles life can hand us.

It was great seeing Chance the Rapper chooses to travel with his band. I could tell within some of his new work that gospel has had a major influence in his roots. Of course as he took the stage his distinct voice rushed in a crowd.

Autograf was very attuned to their sound. The group seemed to have an ability to cast a sheer feel of blissfulness over its listeners and elevate their fans. I don’t believe anyone could even touch the path they chose to take in electronic music.

STS9 also made a great appearance holding it down for electronic jam bands. We got the privilege of interviewing these kind-hearted musicians about their new album release entitled “The Universe Inside” coming out September 2nd. It was interesting hearing their perspective on the album and why they chose to entitle the album in such a deeply inspiring way.
There were too many acts to name that amazed me this year and not to mention the clothes vendors which inspired the splurge of shopping that over took me. The harder DJs acts really got the crowd down and of course there were great vibes around. A first time festie goer even mentioned how a random girl came up and hugged her and told her “I hope you have a great time at the festival.” I realized that yeah, this is how festivals are! You can meet people and have these special interactions with others in a way that our “normal” lives may not have. It seemed to be a great fifth anniversary for Summer Set Music & Camping Festival and can’t wait to make it out there next year.

Calling all adventurers and curious people!! We just recently have come in contact with an amazing art piece that needs to be seen. Check this out!!! This is something we just couldn’t pass up. The Pulse Portal:
–(July 3, 2016)
Deep in the Nevada Black Rock Desert, Burning Man’s yearly gathering showcases the most brilliant and brightest and artistic minds from around the world. end of every summer 70,000 participants gather in extreme conditions to build a city, celebrate art, renew their spirits and re-imagine their world.

Each year a select few are awarded BM’s highly venerable Honorarium Grant, which is specifically designated to help create and transport these massive sculptures to the Black Rock Desert. Recently Chicago’s own, Davis McCarty, was awarded this grant for using a newly engineered material to make an archway that responds to whomever is viewing it.
The mere act of walking through it will change its appearance and generate an experience unique to the person creating it.
“I think the experience of looking into the portal will be like gazing into an infinity but instead of seeing the end, infinity is staring back at you.” said McCarty.
Jutting 16’ skyward and 24′ long, this arch is made from futuristic dichroic acrylic which, like a dragonfly’s wings, simultaneously transmits multiple colors.

“It’s like seeing tessellated pyramids emerging from the ground -as if you were inside a crystal geode.”
https://goo.gl/V866V3

In the sunlight it glitters like a gem casting beautiful dichromatic colors on the sand. At night, with a custom interactive light show, it is programmed to respond with participants as they walk through. The reflective quality of the material plays on the postmodern idea that each viewer brings something unique to the piece. In this case the movement of the viewer literally changes the color and reflection of the sculpture. For the more curious adventurer the finished sculpture will have some hidden inscriptions to find.

“It’s playing on the idea of radical immediacy where if you see something intriguing you dash over to explore whatever it is.”
–Lead Artist Davis McCarty.
Designed by Davis McCarty, and fabricated with the help of a team of Chicago based artists. It is partially funded in part by the Burning Man’s Honorarium Grant, but are also holding an online funded effort at https://goo.gl/V866V3 to finish the sculpture.
Stay tuned as in August there will be a preview event held in Chicago where the Pulse Portal will be on display and featuring a surprise DJ. Music, libation, art and artist all to add the experience. Donations to put the finishing touches on the project in time will be accepted through the kick starter link below where you can donate and get your ticket. MAMBY Makes the Beach Go BOOM!!
Being unique in an ever changing world isn’t like it used to be. I mean how many variations can we find for the same thing? The festival world tends to have a very similar way of curating its artists over the course of the same summer. For this reason, boutique festivals have become a new place to look for the big talent that excites us and an avenue in which to discover talent that we would never have considered before. Couple that thought with an amazing venue and you have the mix for something great!

MAMBY has made this kind mark on the Midwest, if not National, festival circuit unlike any other boutique music event. With so much great talent out there creating the best blend with the most engaging over all experience has become an art in and of itself. React Presents has, in most resent years, increased their game on this level and with the visual creatives that they have partnered with in BAM Creates have created of the most engaging festival experiences that’s being offered to us this summer.

One of the top enthralling performances of the weekend definitely goes to Bishop Briggs. After playing the Pre-Mamby party at SoHo House the night before day one Bishop Briggs brought a force to that stage that definitely will land her a headlining spot very soon. The power of her voice was complimented by the simplicity of her style. Her whole band gave the perfect support for her to blow up that stage. K Flay, Lany, Black Madonna, Thao & the Get Down Stay Down and Wild Belle gave killer performances each, adding to the female power of the weekend which Santigold rounded out splendidly on Sunday night, but let’s not get to far ahead of ourselves. If you found yourselves in the midst of debate as to whom would win out over the battle for bodies, you weren’t alone. I knew that Kaytranada would have to wait this time as I was bound to be bouncing back and forth between Thomas Jack and Hanna Wants. I ended up sticking with Thomas Jack as I knew that later that evening I would see Hanna Wants at Evil Olive. And woah! The Hanna Wants after party was packed and off the hook! Evil Olive, one of Chicago’s hottest venues, is fantastic on really any given night of the week, but that night held no comparison.

Back on the sands of Oakwood Beach, however, Thomas Jack was melting faces with amazing mixes, as he is known for. Now, from that point I set my photographer loose to catch Wilde Belle, whom he has never seen live, but since I have, as great as they always are, Shiba San and Lido were calling, so, I had to answer. It was no surprise as half the fest answered that same call as soon as they heard Chance the Rapper showed up surprising us half way through Lido’s. Getting close to the end of the set I left Chance and Lido to finish my hour with Shiba San. I passed by the restroom/market/food area and noticed, even in my hurry, how well organized and clean they all were. Things that you go “hmm”. Now, after Shiba the crowd again faced an yet another first world decision: Atmosphere?…or Tycho? BOTH! Duh! That was the Beauty of Mamby; how easy and short of a walk it was to make it to the sets that matter. In the case of this fest, pretty much all of them were gold, but that’s what made it so fun and so difficult to decide.

Three roads diverged on a yellow beach,
And sorry I could not travel all,
And be one traveler, well I preach
And stood long to look and listen, to each

Milky Chance, Tale of Us, and Animal Collective. I can’t even begin to explain how my head was exploding. I think I spent more time passing through the boulders that lined the beach just before the “MAMBY” Plant Sculpture (another amazing piece courtesy of BAM) then with my friends broken into their separate factions. I mean I love my Festie Crew, but, dude, there was music happening everywhere and I was like a kid I an audio candy store. I had to keep moving. I will happily admit that I ended at Milky Chance that evening. It’s impressive how well they can jam! Their set was poignant, energetic, and super professional. Even while they were temporarily upstaged by the fireworks they vamped throughout the whole display and as soon as the last cherry popped they sucked you back into the noise and made the masses dance like it was their very first time.

Day two: I kicked it off as soon as doors opened with some Yoga that was offered. But I wasn’t going to miss INPHINITY. Nothing like dancing to a sick House set to wake up my body after a morning stretching session. After that, I pretty much didn’t leave the MIXMAG DJ Tent the majority of the day
Marcus Marr! Woot! That boy has got something! And although Chet Faker, whom we saw later on, helped bring him more into the lime light with their collaborative EP Work, Marr gave us some sick quirky funky stuff on a crazier level than I have wrapped my mind around yet. Be on the lookout and listen. Steve Bug was a blast back. Having grown listening to him because of my club head brother I couldn’t believe his set was so evolved and heavier hitting. Continuing with our city’s own Derrick Carter, I was a happy clam. Never doubt the man’s mixes…never! You know who you are.
With all these names flying around this page and on the stage that weekend it was nearly to an end. I hope Chromeo won’t be JEALOUS but it was the first opportunity to see my hometown hero Lupe Fiasco. I found him late into his game but I was front and center that night. Dude had that crowd in the palm of his brilliant hands. I was proud to make that choice. Now, I knew that I was to see Loco Dice and Martinez Bros. at the MID that night so I made the move to Chet Faker.
I went back to Santigold. I did. But after seeing her twice in New Orleans I had to spread the love around. So I went back to Chet just in time for the EP set with Marcus Marr. And man! It was better than the recordings! Of course! Did they play Gold? Hell yeah. Learning from your Love? Dude! The Trouble with Us? STOP IT! I don’t know much but I know there was a lot of people going home after that set to practice making babies. MAMBY was off the hook. And gonna be real hard to beat!
Electric Forest is my Electric Heaven!
Words and Pictures by: Josh Skolnik
My first Forest completely blew me away. Expectations I had of the Electric Forest were shattered instantly. Within an hour of roaming around Sherwood in a state of disbelief. I suddenly realized the sheer greatness of this place. The trees of Sherwood forest looming over the festival grounds, the beautiful music stretching across the giant venue and the endless crowds of creatures. The combination created an environment that can only be described as otherworldly.

At night was when the Venue came alive in a whole new “light”. The trees in the forest were illuminated by an array of colors. Artists were painting on large canvases in throughout the grounds. Festival goers dressed in costumes, jerseys and other heady attire strolled through the forest in wonder, enjoying one of the most impressive feats of nature and man made scenery I have ever witnessed.

The weather was almost perfect. There was one storm Sunday morning and minimal rain during the festival. We did not let that stop us though. There were no cancellations of any shows and although it was little hot some days, the sun felt amazing. The sound quality was incredible at the shows I attended. Standing in the photo pit during Sound Tribe really solidified the experience for me. Thousands of ecstatic fans prepared for a series of mind melting tunes to penetrate their skulls. There were many musical highlights. Of course The String Cheese incident was one of them.

On Saturday night Cheese brought out what seemed like an unlimited arsenal. One of their dancers was attached to a giant balloon flying over the crowd, dressed in a shiny silver outfit. Enormous inflatable animals were brought out to the crowd along with several more entertainers. Just when i thought it couldn’t get any better, fire works started to explode in the sky. Gold Confetti flakes were shot out over 100 ft into the crowd. It was a beautiful display of meticulously organized bliss.

By Sunday I didn’t want to leave. Suddenly I realized that I would have to wait another year before I could go back. After we packed our things and drove off the festival grounds, my mind was still reeling over one of the best times I’ve ever experienced in my life. Ill see you next year Forest Family!
