Advice from Artists: Purple Tokyo

Being an artist isn’t always as easy as people think. It’s not all colors and tambourines. It comes with many challenges and sometimes unforeseen obstacles. An artist must be fearless and willing to attack these challenges. When it comes to music there is quite a long road to climb up.
When Staring a new musical project it is imperative that you isolate your specific sound and am image that represents what your sonically producing. Finding your voice, so to speak, and what makes it unique. Like in all industries there are steps on this road to having the world hear and recognize your music.
We have started a new series here at CMF to talk with up and coming artists and what they are doing to carve their way in the music world. Then coupling their thoughts with Artist that have made their mark and are working in the industry now.
This article will start with two part series that will first feature a local Chicago group named Purple Tokyo, then will be followed up by an interview with the one and only SAVOY.
Recently we found Purple Tokyo when turned on to their Instagram by a dear friend. We were pretty impressed by their marketing technique and thought to it would be awesome for them to talk a little bit about how they are pushing their project.
CMF: Who is Purple Tokyo?
PT: Purple Tokyo is an exploration of the mind’s mysterious places that are somewhat dangerous and dark while maintaining a sense of fun, feel-good excitement.
CMF: When you started this project what was the theme or goal you had in mind?
PT: Initially, it was an outlet from a previous project. I felt I had gotten away from my roots, and I just wanted to feel a bit more in control. I wanted to be me again. At first it was just DJ-ing stuff that I liked for fun, but in the back of my mind I always wanted to play drums for our live shows, focus on original production, and create a signature sound in both Spanish and English. Specifically a sound that would cross-over genres and emotions.
CMF: Was it a collaborative concept?
PT: Purple Tokyo was a collaboration from the start. As my brother and I started to finalize the music, it quickly grew and became more of an art project. I wanted to create an experience alongside the music and began to form a larger team behind Purple Tokyo—a team of designers, illustrators, photographers, videographers, developers, and other musicians.
CMF: You’ve created a unique form of marketing your artistry. Could you please talk a little bit about that?
PT: I have always admired bands/groups who have a very defined image. Nowadays, it is as important as the music. I wanted Purple Tokyo to be well branded. I began to explore the idea of creating a symbol for the name instead of just some cool font for the name. It began to be developed further with each release.

CMF:How did you develop a concept?
PT; The concept all came together from our instrumental debut, “Deities”. We wanted an image to accompany each song, releasing one song a week over Instagram. However we thought it would be overkill to create new album art for each release. That’s where the idea sparked to break up the original album art into 15 sections, one for each release, to form the big picture. We continued to collaborate with other musicians to make these instrumental versions into actual, finished singles. After shooting a video for the first single, it just clicked. Why not use the initial sections we posted of each instrumental to tag a new profile? That way our followers could go and preview the video as well as the music.
CMF: Why did you feel that this was the best way to begin the group’s promotion?
PT: People are already glued to their phones. Everyday apps, such as Instagram, allow our followers to easily preview our upcoming releases. We innovatively utilize the tag-function to enable further exploration of our visual art and videos for each single.

CMF: You’re opening for Savoy next week. How was your group given this opportunity?
PT: I have been working my ass off to make this project come to life. Deciding that I needed to go full throttle, I quit my full-time architecture job. It became about taking every opportunity to become further involved in the local scene, whether it was selling merch, managing hospitality, booking local acts, taking event photos, producing, or handling the settlement with venues/artists at the end of shows. This gave me a full industry perspective that I could put in use when on the other, fun-side of things.
CMF: There are a lot of artists out there that are looking to get a gig such as yourself. What advice can you give to artists that are looking to do the same?
PT: First and foremost, be yourself; make music because you love it not because it is what’s “cool”. Second, create your own sound. Be authentic, innovative, and wear as many hats as you can fit. If it doesn’t fit, then find a way to make it work. Be in it for the long run, and do your homework. It is all about how bad you want it.
CMF: If you were to ask any of your biggest musical inspirations what they did to hone in their sound what would you ask them? And who would that be?
PT: It would have to be Pink Floyd. I consider them to be pioneers when it comes to having a timeless sound and image. I want to know what they struggled with before finding their signature sound, and what they would consider their perfect-imperfections within their music.
CMF: How do you plan on moving forward after this show?
PT: Purple Tokyo is in its infancy. This show is a great opportunity and stepping-stone; we are really looking forward to the response from this live show, and hope to connect with new people and grow in our fan base. Moving forward, we want to portray both a consistent image and a flexible sound to our fans. We will continue to have a new release every month until the end of the year. It is very exciting to expand on the first phase of this project and see our Instagram world collide with our live show.
In celebration of our new article series (which we will be following up with Part 2 in an interview with Savoy this weekend) and the upcoming show for Purple Tokyo and Savoy (presented by Silver Wrapper and React Presents) we are doing a surprise giveaway for two tickets for you and a guest to attend the show. In order to claim it you must Follow Savoy, Purple Tokyo, and CMF and repost the featured image with its hashtag on either Facebook or Instagram. Chances double if you post on both. So, for those over achievers here is where you can really make it happen.

Bam Creates & The Godfrey Hotel Presents: INDUSTRY SLEEPOVER

Bam Creates Industry Sleep Over 2017 was held at the Hotel Godfrey on Sunday Febuary 19th.  It was a blend of funky blue Afros, a laid back vibe hipsters, a dash of suit and tie gentlemen, and all held together with plenty of booty shorts and the pasty adhesives. The diversity in attire allowed the attendees to express themselves in whichever way allowed them to get down and let loose from the afterhours of work. This networking party was meant to not put a face to the name but personality.
Upon entrance the first floor of the Godfrey hotel was transformed into a club equipped with two bars, plenty of seating, and art décor. Water trickled down a behind us on a black marble wall adding touch of nature into the fully modernized layout. Loud music played over the sound system while people took to the floors. Gogo styled women danced upon high rise seats while a cast shadows contrasted the highlights emphasizing abdominal twisting. Each second that passed a new intriguing person made their way across your path. The mixture of unique attire and compelling conversation was purely invested in this scene.

The outdoors was open for people to smoke and drink while getting a glimpse of a city view. Standing nearly twice my size; oversized vintage styled lamps were intermittently placed upon the roof top. I stood and took pictures near the spore of the lamp while the milk-white lamp shade engulfed me beneath it like the cap of a lactifluus piperatus. It melted in cerulean blue accentuating the artic kiss of this winter wonderland look. The majestic atmosphere felt as magical as a Fantasia Disney scene. Luxury fire pits and heated cellophane igloos make it easy for guests to enjoy their time without scurrying in from the impenitent Chicago winters.

We began venturing down the hallways following the hotel carpet like a scene from Fear and Loathing. Pocket sized underground parties held compact in the dimension of a hotel room. Music bled into the hallways as several floors were exclusively closed off for the party guests. There could be no explanation for what randomness can be packed away within each cubby. Guys in thrift shop fur coats and women in silk robes and VS sports bras filed between the walls. Here we ran into a women who sported a black feathered Mohawk and snake! We snuck away to find an industrial cage for the mini photo shoot.

I watched as a red ball came rolling into the hallway; then a blue then a yellow. Sure enough a ball pen was just around the corner. Slow motion camera defied laws of gravity as it showcased a cascade of elementary colors floating through the air like an astronaut as he plays with ripping water bubbles through deep space.
We continued into another room and curiously found our way through black veils. A man stood like some sort of hyper reality slinger leaning against a table which showcased various virtual reality goggles and business cards. He was well dressed with a slick way about himself as he introduced to us this goggled vision.
Inside sprang an ocean scene that came alive from the wreckage of pirate ship. Physically I turned my body like a compass looking for the North Pole when suddenly an intimate view of a blue whale made his way before my very eyes. He motion towards you as my eyes gazed back and forth at the touch of grays and blue. The gentle eyes blinked and interacted with my presence just as much as I was interacting with his. This only confirms what kind of quasi matrix reality we will be seeing in the not far future. The blue whale eyes were molded with emotion and his soul seemed just as deep as the ocean I discovered him in. He seemed imprinted with the gentleness of old age. In all honesty he was probably the most sensitive and deep character I had encountered that evening. His sensitivity seemed curious for expansion and growth; not tethered in character by distraction of the city. He was humbled beneath the silent waters and wise to the glorification of sexual exploitation.
I removed the goggles to teleport right back to where I had previously remembered leaving my body. In the dark ambience of a hotel room with starkly characters all around me. We were handed a business card that read Midwest Immersive.

Room 612 held a massive dance party secluded into the darkness. Bodies moved to the pulsing bass whilst DJs spun their music influence over the attendees. The room was netted in black paper machrochet from ceiling to walls. We were drawn into the den of the lion where Red light and smoke dissipated into the humid air. Finally I felt at home deep on the dance floor. Here is where I felt belonged as the crowd and I all moved as one. The Dj’s Hair flattened from under the weight of her headphones as the vibrant highlights of Carmel hair popped against her skin. Photographer’s shutters began to snap as she explored our minds with trance.

This party was a behind the scenes look at how Chicago’s Industry lives and breathes. After the exhaustion of hard work this celebratory form of meditation was rightfully deserved. Keen Entrepreneurial skills, networking intuition, art, dance, food coinsurers and incredible taste speaks feats into why Chicago is one of the most talked about cities in the world!

Slim Freedom Receives Head Nod from Snoop, Usher, and Vic Mensa

Ashely “SLIM FREEDOM” Stevenson held her first major concert this past Saturday after a remarkable rise in social media that rocketed her to 3.6 Million views on a video that was posted of her playing “Landslide” in the Chicago subway transit back in April 2016. Relatively unknown at that time to the mass public, her amazing video hovered at around a thousand views until it was reposted by Snoop Dogg, Usher, and Vic Mensa just this past month.
Unlike many other buskers that have made their daily bread down in the warm tunnels, beneath the Chicago streets, Slim Freedom quickly found that the growing accolades would put her directly in the spotlight; as news of her rising popularity started to pop up in the mainstream media. Before 2016 was over she had already landed a spot on WGN television and was being courted by new hot Chicago artist management company Ambassador Gold Label, who set up and fully produced her first major live performance. (posted below)
The show, called “From the Subway to the Stage”, was an exclusive industry event that sold out within a few days before Slim Freedom took the stage. The venue, a new and fully developed recording/soundstage studio called Embassy Studios, made this it’s inaugural event. Just off of Western Avenue and 14th street this jaw dropping venue lives right around the corner from Cinespace and Lagunitas Brewery. Equipped with everything from professional lighting, HD cameras, a fully projection mapped room and a sound system that could blow the skirt off the Queen Mother herself it was the perfect setting to display how much of a powerhouse Slim Freedom truly is. The team Stevenson has acquired in the Ambassador GL family aren’t messing around. This is apparent in how they are able to make the kinds of moves that they are making with Slim Freedom in such a short amount of time.

In only one month this wonderful artist who was just trying to hear her mesmerizing voice in the echo of the concrete tunnels has now taken the first steps toward a major career in the music industry. Already being approach by some major artists for collaboration and being signed to independent Ambassador Gold Label, Slim Freedom has now become a team that ranges from lighting designers and camera operators to media managers and merch handlers. Slim Freedom is a fully developed act.
When asked how she felt about it:
CMF: So how has this process been for you coming into a major operation from busking on the streets?
AS: Man,…I can’t even…Man, I just feel blessed you know. Everybody here [Ambassador] has just been blowing my mind. {shakes her head in awe} I really…Man.
CMF: Are you ok?
AS: {Smiles Brightly} Definitely! Hell Yeah!
Stevenson’s voice was sweet, raspy, and full of joy. She had a kind demeanor and seemed to spend more time listening than talking. When I met her I walked in to her memorizing, not lyrics but names. Curiously I asked who, thinking it would be some industry big wig, but she responded that it was a few fans of hers that were invited.
AS: Man, Playing on the street you meet a lot of people, you know. It’s hard sometimes to remember all the names when it’s easier to recall the faces.  I just want them to know I remember not just their face but who they are. It feels good when someone recalls you by name, you know. It’s small but I want them to know that I appreciate them and not just hear me say it on stage.
I kept wanting to just give her a hug in hopes that some of that good feeling would rub off. Talking with her I could see there is something special about her spirit that just exuded a remarkable urban grace similar to what we have seen in the past with the likes of Lauren Hill, Erica Badu, or Bob Marley. Stevenson is definitely a star on the rise having moved from the streets to the stage in a hard way that her momentum is undeterminable at this point.
There’s really no telling where she could go. Though we have a pretty good idea which direction she is headed. So, to Slim Freedom, I say:
We will be watching with anticipation and listening with open ears and open hearts.

Reaction New Year's Eve – Never Look Back

Reaction NYE returned to the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont after their extraordinary success of the previous year. The indoor convention center allowed for ample amount of room to hold two separate stages and as well as a Silent disco. Their was the Main Stage called The Warehouse, a stage to the side called The Arcade Stage, and a Silent Disco Lounge in the room just adjacent. The Event came equipped with vendors offering a variety of festive gear; including apparel and hats. This two day event held a variety artists including some national and international names; excitingly, we even saw some of our very own Chicago local artists!
We were welcomed in with an interactive art exhibit of a large piped pyramid glowing in melting florescent lights. It stood proudly as a swarm of patterns bounced off the canvas like surface that was mapped in projection of ethereal energy fields. We were drawn further in towards the stages dressed in moving lights. Magenta, yellow, and red fractals swung from side to side over our heads onto the industrial piped ceiling and reflected off the black finished show room floor. The lights were calibrated to the sound of the high hitting snares and of the dark trance music that boomed through our chest walls. “The Warehouse” I thought to myself, what a fitting name for this vibe. The atmosphere was somewhat more sheltered that any straight up underground rave with some undisclosed location because we were allowed to have a great time without any haunting feelings of it being busted by cops at any point.
Headlining for the first night was Anderson Paak, Dillon Francis, Danny Brown, and tying it all up was an incredible performance by Flume.
I was pleasantly surprised by an amazing performance from Anderson Paak. From the beginning of the performance it looked like just your run of the mill rapper and dj act; but then it got even more interesting! Not only could he rap but he also had an amazing singing voice and on top of all that he began playing drums while doing all of this ! They definitely had inspiration from funk, rnb, as well as their very own take on modern rap music. He covered a variety of styles and was accompanied by a truly talented band and keyboardist.

We started our way towards the pin ball machines as we work with the trance stage. Here we found great inspiration for snapping shots of many dancers and groups of friends. We were lucky enough to be able to check out many people performing poi and shufflers with bright LED shoes. A girl stood towards the crowd as prismatic colors evolved from the darkness from end to end of a taunt string which had magically flown through the air. We watched the girl perform poi with such adept fluidity that with further speculation it proved to be such a natural part of who she was.

A rumble of snare rolls starting raising to encourage the breaks from within the music and shufflers began making their marks on the floor. Out of the corner of my eyes I saw videographers followed by bright lights as they traveled around the crowd looking for their next muse. The influence of their camera work brought out the vibrancy of the shy and encouraged for the confidence of the poised. A girl dressed in a black jumpsuit and hair pulled into buns on the top of her head replicated some sort of hybrid cat woman. She showcased her LED shoes for the camera by cutting shapes and smiling. I noticed dancers were completely in the moment loosing themselves within the arpeggiated melodies of Air Sine.
Dillon Francis performance pulled a lot of inspiration out of the Chicago trap scene. Large Screens on each side of the main stage showcased mirrors like geometric patterns then back to Dillon Francis who sported a Hawks Jersey. He threw down one of the filthiest performances I have seen thus yet from him. It was a then refreshed with soft melodic break towards the middle allowing us to collect our thought for just moments to just go right back into another episode of bass drops and an even hard finale. His set was definitely harder than his set at summer set so I’m guessing he must have learned how we in Chicago like our electronic scene!

Flume was a very anticipated performance as he always keeps the audience in suspense in his set openings. This performance was no different. It began with an angelic choir as a high feeling of peace swept into the crowd. For moments it allowed us to rethink the way we judged and second guess ourselves. The way we pulled down upon our shirts and fixed our hair or the way we create bubbles between ourselves from society. The sound was engineered so precisely that it was a completely obvious to what this artist wanted us to take from him. A white light glazed over our eye lids transcending us with the reinvention of music. He completely threw out any stereotype of electronic music and created his own path. By simply of breaking the habit of the monogamous; it began differing our language of expressing ourselves. He placed his performance solemnly somewhere between where an epiphany could be reached through the Vatican walls and who’s lives were dedicated to the forces of what drove our being into an electric innovation of the future tense. He continued on with some of his most well known tracks as well as others from his new album Skin including my new favorite “Insane.”
NYE night was headlined by acts such as Gucci Mane, Manic Focus, Tchami, and ending with Zeds Dead.
Tchami made it all the way from France to make it out profiling his future house sound for us.
In contrast to the night before this night The Arcade Stage came harder with trap acts such as Jsquared as well as Kyral x Banko. The stage were packed and the crowd ate up all the filth they were throwing down. The night of NYE was especially lit because of the overwhelming excitement for the countdown. The crowd went double as hard this night as the night before and their was and even more feel of adrenaline in the air. The acts that were booked for this night only further motivated a rage to tie up 2016.
As unexpected as it could have been the count down was then MC’ed by local DJ from group Porn and Chicken! Under his honors we were welcomed into the new year and said good riddance to 2016!

Moments after Dom’s midnight countdown; Zeds Dead took the stage. As the first act of the new year all other acts will have a hard bar to surpass! They killed their set; but of course I wouldn’t have expected anything less from them. Die hard fans were having the absolute time of their lives dancing and cheering to familiar tunes. Their set was incomparable to any I have heard yet of theirs in Chicago. They were completely in sync with what the crowd wanted and created an epic dance party setting off 2017 with high expectations to what this year will bring.
We tried to savior the moment as long as we could but by the end of the night crowds began scrambling all around us. Heading out within our random conversation with strangers who we had become in someway emotionally attached to. 2016 came and went and if I learned anything from last year; it was to never look back! 2017 is our chance for a fresh new start no matter at what point of life we are at or what kind of trouble we think we found ourselves in. I am looking forward to what turn music will take this year; knowing now there are no boundaries to our generation!

Freaky Deaky

Eerie skies loomed over our heads as We were welcomed into Toyota Park to enjoy another year of their Halloween themed music festival, Freaky Deaky. Figures brandished reapers near the entrance with raw fleshy paws and gigantous claws. These fallen angels in tarnished wings stood snarled and burnt with a faces of a pit bull and a bodies of men. A sky scraping architecture art glowed in neon whilst showcasing in fire dancers. Costumed and uniformed the carnivalesque performers hypnotized us with their pyrotechniques. Rings of fire and poi danced while the sound of whiping flames circled the dancers hips. The graceful hooper danced inside the turbulence from the eye of its fiery tornado.
statue
The venue was nicely laid out with maximum efficiency for walking space. Stages and venues were expertly placed to provide maximum fluidity for the festival goers. There were three stages. Two larger tented stages and A middle roofed stage dedicated to nonstop deep house artists. The large skull in the liking of a misfits skull molded on the middle stage had made for great landmark and in effect a vivid graphic to reminisce upon while the an amsterdam styled bass enticed groups of shufflers.
Brodinski effectively meshed deep house with trap influences. His dark sound filled with high clicks of snares and deep subs perfected his scene. The progressiveness churned the crowd within hypnosis of the undying arpeggiations.
As we continued the walk I became distracted with passer byers whose eyes were concealed in white out contacts. Their eyes pierced through the soft of our retina. It was hard not to be intrigued with this menacing look. This vampire look seemed to draw closer in the pheromones while their teeth thirsty for blood and caressed in the perfume of mint.
There were dozens of costumes from comical to creepy to sexy; but mostly sexy. Girls danced in boy shorts with underbutt cleavage and hour glass silhouettes. Other Dressed in creatures or fantasies of purple unicorns. The beauty disguised behind masks and the beauty of disguise in which allows the mask detach the individual into the figure and human being of all relating body.
DJ Snake mixed hard dance break downs without lulls. Above the spines of his track brass trumpets banged a catchy melodic chops.
The crowds were body to body cheering on the DJ. Young go hards with green hair forcefully stepped side to side cutting shapes.cutting shapes with force that shook pebbles on the concrete from under their sneaker tops in Constance of a rhythm. There were hyped up smiles and laughter as groups of friends ran from Stage to stage in the hopes to catch each artists set. The continuance of dancing was a medicine for the soul and the counter cultured presence in humanitarianism. The artists herded us together with the magic of vibration and moved us with panels of computerized madness.
Snails undoubtedly was the filthiest set of the weekend.Extraterrestrial machines begin quarreling from the magnetized outer space battlefield. I’m always impressed with the songs he likes to remix because reminds me of my old rock days when I was utterly infatuated with System of a Down. I definitely respect the innovation and his courage to take computerized music into a different direction than most. He his consistently influences his peers.
Jauz rap styled hard with a consistent trumpet riffs matched with synthetic jolts of swooping womps. Enlightening the confidence and a mind set to conquer. A marching band followed the embarking into our psychological pathways unto an overjoyed meditation. He had stylized an undeniably recognizable style within the day’s pool of producers which has set him aside.
A vogue depicted go go dancer earned her place onstage along the side next to Juaz. She interpreted the music into the physical realm which really made the show more interactive. She dressed of the Victorian ages with a large powdered wig portraying the madness behind Mozart timeless compositions. She used her body and hands in freeze frame; contorting the beauty behind the human form. She represented the undeniable allure of the natural body intertwined with the brilliance behind the imagination of fashion.

Tiesto ended the weekend with a mixture of old school and new school. It was quite a surprise to hear the newest endeavors of music that he had compiled into his mix. He left no stone unturned and even threw down trap! Older fans were surprised but not upset with this new route he was carving into. His heavy trance roots still remained but a new attitude flourished from within.
All in all, Freaky deaky was wild and well worth the time checking it out. The Halloween theme festival is definitely a favorite of mine. Everyone is as much part of the fest as the artists and dancers. This fest gives you a chance to show off your creativity with wild costumes and brings out an extra playfulness within the crowd.
