–(July 3, 2016)
Deep in the Nevada Black Rock Desert, Burning Man’s yearly gathering showcases the most brilliant and brightest and artistic minds from around the world. end of every summer 70,000 participants gather in extreme conditions to build a city, celebrate art, renew their spirits and re-imagine their world.1634e8ea315a6ae8f4600734846cb2b1

Each year a select few are awarded BM’s highly venerable Honorarium Grant, which is specifically designated to help create and transport these massive sculptures to the Black Rock Desert. Recently Chicago’s own, Davis McCarty, was awarded this grant for using a newly engineered material to make an archway that responds to whomever is viewing it. Pulse Portal by Davis McCarty 2
Pulse Portal by Davis McCarty 0 (2)The mere act of walking through it will change its appearance and generate an experience unique to the person creating it.
“I think the experience of looking into the portal will be like gazing into an infinity but instead of seeing the end, infinity is staring back at you.”  said McCarty.
Jutting 16’ skyward and 24′ long, this arch is made from futuristic dichroic acrylic which, like a dragonfly’s wings, simultaneously transmits multiple colors.

In the sunlight it glitters like a gem casting beautiful dichromatic colors on the sand. At night, with a custom interactive light show, it is programmed to respond with participants as they walk through. The reflective quality of the material plays on the postmodern idea that each viewer brings something unique to the piece.  In this case the movement of the viewer literally changes the color and reflection of the sculpture. For the more curious adventurer the finished sculpture will have some hidden inscriptions to find.

“It’s playing on the idea of radical immediacy where if you see something intriguing you dash over to explore whatever it is.”

Designed by Davis McCarty, and fabricated with the help of a team of Chicago based artists.  It is partially funded in part by the Burning Man’s Honorarium Grant, but are also holding an online funded effort at https://goo.gl/V866V3  to  finish the sculpture.

Stay tuned as in August there will be a preview event held in Chicago where the Pulse Portal will be on display and featuring a surprise DJ. Music, libation, art and artist all to add the experience. Donations to put the finishing touches on the project in time will be accepted through the kick starter link below where you can donate and get your ticket. #Back to the Beach#

Mamby is BACK! Now hear this, Get on it! React has secured the best line up so far of the summer. Banger after banger. I will tell you this if you aren’t going you are missing the best party and after party series of what will be here in Chicago this year. Some fests may be bigger and have more days, but to jam such great acts on the beach with the best local support is going to he hard to beat. Let’s take a quick look; shall we?
Screen Shot 2016-06-25 at 9.11.50 PM
Map
There’s not much that needs to be said about the headliners other than the fact that they’re here in Chicago and you need to see them. The talent there already speaks for itself. But what can we expect from the festival and the grounds? Bam Creates is a part of the artistic team that will be blowing this beach up. Fresh off of winning the best one off party of the year at the Chicago Nightlife Awards for their Industry Sleepover, BAM is creating tons of eye candy as a backdrop for the beautiful people in bikinis and bathing suits. Joe Quade (who heads this outfit) designed for Mamby before so if you were there last year, you know it’s going to be good.
Now if you’re like myself and love to play in the nightlife scene, then the names Gene Farris and Garrett Inphinity will be of no surprise. These Chicago killers of spin are hitting up the second stage with massive selections that I have gotten the privilege to sample. I know all of my house heads will be present, but for those of you for Who haven’t had the chance make a point to, do so.
I have sat with Inphinity on a number of occasion but did so just recently for Mamby. I was curious to know about some of the things that placed him on the line up. Here were his thoughts:
Screen Shot 2016-06-25 at 9.23.41 PM
CMF: You have been jamming in the scene for sometime now what drives you to continue?
INPHINITY: It’s been a trip being able to be a full-time DJ and producer. Loving what you for a living is all I need to continue. Having some of the best friends and supporters believing in what you do makes it a bit easier.
CMF: What’s your process like when producing a new tune?
INPHINITY: Usually, it’s the drums and groove first. Then I’ll start working on the bassline. When those two elements are sounding right, the rest will fall into place rather quickly.
CMF: How do you know that a track will get an audience going while you are creating a track?
INPHINITY: That comes from years of experience in DJing nightclubs. I see what works on the dance floor night after night.
CMF:What’s most inspiring to you in your work?
INPHINITY :Making music that people will listen to or dance to for
years instead of weeks. Quality over quantity. It makes the creation process harder, but the end results most satisfying.
As of right now the forecast looks good, but I’ll tell you this with the lineup as it is there is absolutely no way come rain or shine you should miss this show, because come rain or shine this show is happening. If you work, call in sick! It’s someone’s birthday? Forget the dinner party buy her a ticket! Understand, I’m not advocating everyone to shirk your responsibilities…but shirk them! Shirk them NOW! And if for some reason you just can’t make it (we’re not going to excuse you for that) there are plenty of after parties that will definitely be worth your time.
Here Is the list of after parties going on in the city.
Link to after party tickets
Most of them are sold out but if you hang outside I’m sure someone will have a ticket that they are looking to get rid of.
Screen Shot 2016-06-25 at 9.25.12 PM
React is definitely on fire this year having just finished Spring Awakening with some killer headliners, over taking a lot of the booking at Schuba’s, and mixing up the type of talent that they’re bringing into their wheelhouse. However, if my instinct is right they are going to out do themselves next weekend. All the signs are pointing up and up and the anticipation here is way above anything that has been circulating around the other upcoming fests or parties.
I am most excited to see the pairing of Marcus Marr, who is spinning on the second stage, and Chet Faker. Their collaborative EP just released five months ago is an amazing pairing of rock and electronic sounds mixed with Chet’s smooth soulful voice. I have had this on repeat for the past month and it still hasn’t gotten old. Here take a listen for what’s in store.
Marus Marr
Chet Faker
Now listen, I am gonna step up on the proverbial soap box for a second. I know a lot of you are going to be out there drinking and turning up which means things are going to drop, people are going to lose items and garbage is going to collect. After this past Memorial Day, North Avenue Beach was completely destroyed and the cleanup was horrific. This is our city people. These beaches are home to all of us. Can we please put on our big kid pants and keep it clean? What’s the point of having it on the beach if we can’t come back to it? Let’s just make an unspoken pact to take the 10 extra steps to put the cans and bottles in the right receptacle. It’s better that it collects around the trashcan than spread out over the entire beach. Nobody wins after that kind of aftermath. Personally I advocate leaving no trace but I can’t expect everybody to follow suit. So please take your trash with you and find the right receptacle. #Stepping down#.
Going green, Mamby will be providing free shuttle transportation between the Cermack Redline station and the McCormick Place Greenline station each day between 12pm to 11pm. This should help with parking and keeping festival goers safe. Everybody be safe.
Last but not least, It shouldn’t have to be said but it’s better to be reminded, HYDRATE. There will be filling stations throughout the grounds so bring a camel back, canteen, goat skin, whatever, just keep hydrated and make sure your friends do too.
This year at Mamby on the Beach we’re gonna blow it out of the water!!!

5 Things We Loved About This Year's Lightning in a Bottle Festival

5) The Woogie Stage

unspecified

Now this one is a no brainer, how could it not make the list.  From Lane 8’s Friday afternoon set to Sunday’s sunset boogie with Lee Burridge the Woogie stage had the best acts from all over the country come and grace the stage.  Looking like it’s straight from a Dr. Seuss book, The Woogie stage oozes an essence all it’s own.  This year with the addition of the hidden hammock glen, we were able to rest our dancing feet while still able to enjoy being serenaded by whoever was throwing down at the time.  Definitely a double thumbs up on this stage and the atmosphere it attracted.

4) CloZee at The Thunder Stage

13403264_1424088627605087_6832824323114678423_o

For those who unfortunately missed her set Friday set at Thunder Stage… i am truly sorry because you missed quite the party.  Her set took us on an epic journey oscillating between worlds of different musical dimension.  She seamlessly combined her technical precision with wild imagination and powerful basslines to have the whole Thunder Stage up on their feet gettin’ down just before the golden hour was upon us.

3) The Art

13308199_1424088284271788_5917467831248259633_o

Everywhere you looked this year at LiB there was art.  Each piece strategically placed to catch the eye of the passerby’s.  We were blessed with the most amazing live painting experiences almost everywhere you looked, along with huge art installations scattered throughout.  The pieces ranged from small interactive instillation to larger-than-life sculptures and architectural pieces.  Although I was thoroughly sad we were not graced this year with the Android Jones dome, it was more than made up for with the other instillation

2) Pumpkin’s Tribute at The Woogie

13415395_10154113099482527_1032780220541630392_o

The loss of Pumpkin shook the dance music community.  Saturday morning at The Woogie, festival goers gathered to celebrate the life who brought us each so much joy through his music.  This sad, yet joyous event filled the hearts of each of the attendees.  We danced, cried, hugged and loved to the beat of Pumpkin’s music.

1)  Faleva Bar

13392153_1424088140938469_9189282152002028386_o

WOW, was Faleva bar upgraded this year.  From the tree house dancing areas to the late night jams, Falava bar was definitely a place you did not want skip out on.  From the start of Thursday to ending late Sunday night Faleva bar had it’s patrons dancing into the wee hours of the morning each day of the festival.  It was truly upgraded this year, with the addition of tree houses dispersed around the stage for festival goers to climb up and have their own dance party while peering down on those dancing below.  The music and atmosphere did not disappoint.

If you are like myself and many others having extreme LiB withdrawals you are in luck… 1) Woogie Weekend is right around the corner, be sure to grab those ticket before it’s too late.  If you are unable to attend Woogie Weekend, 2) satisfy that LiB need with this amazing after movie….

Can’t wait for next year, is it 2017 yet??

Explore the Micro-Environments at this year's Lightning in a Bottle

Lightning in a Bottle is much more than your average music festival.  Venture away from the main stages and find yourself transported into the many weird and wonderful realms nestled on the grounds of LIB, each micro-environment ripe with exciting expansions, new offerings, and scintillating music for 2016.
Step into the vintage portal between the Temple of Consciousness and The Village, and immerse yourself within the Grand Artique’s famed Frontierville.  This year updates to Frontierville included a renovation of the Grand Artique’s live music stage now named The Mission Stage.  This stage will host an array of entertainment including VKCE (Vokab Company x Crush Effect), Whilk & Misky, Dirtwire, Pimps of Joytime, NoMBe, and Jeremy Sole who will take his audience on a sonic trip through the past, present and future of Roots music during a very special 11am Sunday Revival.   You can count on The Mission Stage to be bumpin’ at all hours so check out the full line-up below or just follow your ears to the magic.  Also found with the Grand Artique are a tipsy Gypsy Encampment host to mischief and mayhem, Boss Whispers’ General Store & Trading Post, Skinny DeVille’s Bar (a rare blend of theatrics and deviant mixology), and The Poison Oak Hotel, a two-storied structure with an enormous fire and improvised melodies.
Not far from the Grand Artique explorers may find themselves at the boomin’ Jive Joint an interactive art installation designed to exude French Quarter vibes.  Here those lucky enough to find it are rewarded with super funky, soulful tunes by producer Super Tall Paul‘s legendary on the spot musical looping, and expect the unexpected as this spot is known for its comedic improv.  Witness Amori’s Casino & Burlesque, a sexy experience featuring live burlesque and cabaret and check out Giggle Juice Cafe at the Lost Hotel, which features a full-service restaurant, and juice bar.
For an added flair to the LIB experience, attendees have the option to purchase tickets to delicious and entertaining pop-up dinners at one of three immersive locations! Amori’s Casino & Burlesque, Giggle Juice Cafe, and The Last Supper Club will all be serving multi-course meals from Italian to Vegan, and enjoy their special brand of entertainment on the side. These unique experiences do sell out — reserve a seat by purchasing tickets here.
Early Arrival Offerings:
This year Do LaB has opened the gates to LIB a day early for those looking to maximize all that the festival has to offer. The purchase of an Early Arrival Pass comes with a plethora of experiences centered around opportunities to explore connections within the community before turning the music on for the full festival adventure.
Cacao Ceremony – The Temple of Consciousness will kick off its “spiritual” opening on Wednesday May 25th at 9:30pm with a traditional Cacao Ceremony. Cacao is a traditional plant rich in nutrients, as well as serotonin, tryptophan and dopamine. As such, the Cacao Ceremony brings with it the intention to stoke the spiritual soul of early arrivers at Lightning in a Bottle with a ritualized one of a kind experience that projects positivity and connectedness to open hearts from beyond the boundaries of culture and time.
Temescal Lodge – Near the Arch at the Temple of Consciousness and Pineal Playground, a ritual will be presented by authentic Mayan teachers on Early Arrival day. The Temescal Lodge will host an experience founded in the medicine of Ancient Mayan sweat, which is a practice that’s spiritually revitalizing and steeped in tradition.
Action Day – Join LIB 2016 artist Polish Ambassador for an Action Day at the Village from 1pm to 7pm. Action Day activities include: planting a few trees, placing mulch around existing ones to strengthen their roots, building a cob oven and much more!
Village Life – A vast collection of educational and ceremonial offerings from 2pm to 2am at The Village, featuring spiritually inspired workshops and tribal ceremonies to connect the past, present and future.
Torn Between by Hoodie – When natural landscapes come alive, the accomplished artist Hoodie can’t be far. Known for his uncanny sculptures comprised completely from twigs and branches, this tremendous artist plans to unveil a symbolic piece titled “Torn Between” that will celebrate the dichotomy of important decisions that affect us all in our daily lives.
Meditation Mountain by Nature Dreamweaver – Nate “Nature Dreamweaver” Hogen is an internationally celebrated installation artist known for his natural nest-like sculptures and ceremonial transmutation circles developed entirely from nature.
Other Experiences to Take Advantage of While Roaming LIB Include:
The Traveling Spectacular – A surrealist vaudeville experience inspired by the dreams and dust of a bygone age, live music by the Oddjob Ensemble, grand illusions, a sword swallowing houdini extraordinaire, vaudevillian comedy, alluring dancers and the fire-breathing Devil himself!
Transformation Station – A Human Décor Zone staffed by professional face and body painters, headed up by Audette Sophia of Become the Art.
Black Rock Observatory (BRO) – Look up to the heavens in one of two 21-foot domes housing a 20″ telescope for nighttime viewing and white light and h-alpha solar telescopes.
Highlove Vitality Elixir Lounge – An intimate speakeasy lounge, serving up tasty elixirs alongside burlesque, vaudeville, and aerial shows. Settle in for musical interludes, live performance, discussion panels, and dance parties. The elixir lounge is open around the clock, serving you when you need it most.
Playing Card Station & Oasis Rejuvenation Station – Choose some cards and create some cards at this Catalyst Card Playing Station, a social playing card experiment designed to bring more playfulness, depth, and interactivity to your festival experience. Spritz yourself down from the essential oil spritzer tree or dip in the bird bath – just next door.
Archival Ink by Fine Art Direct – Curators of this year’s art exhibition will showcase three separate galleries – Pop Surrealism, Visionary, and Counterculture. This year’s featured artists are Hans Haveron, Alex Grey, Mear One, Mugwort, and Sequoia. Come by to watch live body painting, artist signings, and to win a valuable print of your own.

Lightning in a Bottle Announces "The Village" Workshop and Presenters

Do LaB proudly unveils the 2016 theme, presenters, workshops and offerings for Lightning in a Bottle’s micro-environment and sacred epicenter, The Village. Built around a beautiful Grandmother Oak, paying homage to its 2016 theme, “Tree of Life”, The Village will give attendees a unique opportunity to learn by doing, develop hands on skills and discover what it takes to create and sustain a living Village together as a community.
Fueled by the intention to bring ceremonial and ancient wisdom traditions into festival culture, The Village will create a regenerative, restorative way of life through educational demonstrations, enlightening workshops and singular metamorphic experiences. Step inside the Community Lodge to explore daily workshops centered around earth-based traditions, rituals, social action strategies and plant medicine teachings. Luminaries taking the Lodge stage this year include visionary activist and founder of Portland’s renowned Village Building Convergence Mark Lakeman, festival returnee Mexihcah medicine man and lineage holder Kuautli Vasquez, Community leaders and ceremonialists Isis Indriya and Eve Ladyapples who will lead a fully experiential and participatory journey up the kabbalistic Tree of Life, and Esperide Ananas the Ambassador of Damanhur (an Italian-based federation of spiritual communities, with its own culture, art, currency, schools, and underground temple built entirely by hand, which is known as “the eighth wonder of the world”) who will speak on the Magic and Power of Community.
The Village’s 2016 theme, Tree of Life, will focus on re-integrating humanity into right relationship with our ecosystem. A carefully selected groups of Village Earth Stewards will deliver a wide range of programming to help participants move naturally into their empowered role as agents of the lands. These Stewards include two legends of permaculture and regenerative design visionaries Penny Livingston Stark and James Stark, owner of Permaculture Artisans Erik Ohlsen who will speak on Permaculture Visions for LIB and Beyond, and a myriad of speakers from Planet Experts, a growing community of global change makers that includes scientists, advocates, innovators, visionaries and journalists who are committed to protecting our planet by sharing stories that matter.
Other Village environments include the Essential Oil Learning Lab, sanctuary refuge space The Haven, Casa Sagrada space for sacred healing, the magical Witch’s Hut for mystic, esoteric teachings and herbal apothecary, the Permaculture Action Hub, a Mentor Space for personal connections with LIB’s elders and wisdom keepers, and the beloved Ancestral Arts Arbor for mentorships of traditional skills such as fire by friction, and wood carving. And for the first time ever, The Village will present the farm-to-festival theatrical dining experience, the Last Supper Club, where diners will fuel their imaginations and enchant their tastebuds.
As the sun begins to set over the native grounds of LIB each evening, participants are invited to lend their presence and energy to the Sunset Ceremony, and witness the daily ritual of the lightning of the Sacred Fire. Forming an elemental triad, the Sacred Fire joins the Community Fountain and the Seed Mandala to form the ceremonial center of The Village – truly a sight to see and experience!
For a taste of what’s to come at The Village at LIB, seekers can go to Nevada City, CA from April 21-24 for The Village Symposium. This gathering is a journey into community building, education, ritual and social change with workshops, ceremony, performance, dancing, and feasts. Visit their Facebook event page for more info.
